Debate takes first in three categories

The Kayhi Competitive Speech and Debate team took first three times at Thunder Mountain High School for the final regional meet of the year Jan. 15-16.
Senior Cheyenne Mathews and junior Audrey Kistler won the Public Forum final debate and had an overall record of 6-1. Junior Bella Posey and Sophomore Kody Malouf had a record of  5-1 and placed fourth overall.
The debate was on the resolve, “The United States federal government should adopt a carbon tax.”
Kistler took first in speaker points and fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking. Mathews took first in Expository Speaking, second in Extemporaneous Speaking, third in Original Oration, and fourth in Speaker Points. Posey took second in speaker points. Sophomore Piper Cooper took fourth in Original Oration.
The four seniors on the trip, Mathews, David Willson, Alec Miller, and Sylvan Blankenship were honored along with the other team’s seniors on the final day.
The team has a month to prepare before they head to the State meet in Anchorage Feb. 18-20.
