The Kayhi Drama, Debate, and Forensics team sealed third place in the debate sweepstakes in Anchorage over the weekend. There were two first place finishers for the team.
Senior Cheyenne Mathews placed first in expository speaking and first in the state public forum debate, teamed up with Junior Audrey Kistler. There was more Kayhi success with two speakers landing in the top 10 on speaker points. Piper Cooper placed 8th and Mathews at 5th.
“The difference between this year and last year,” Matthews said. “Is that this year is so much more competitive. I placed 5th in speaker points, yet was only 1.5 points away from the person in first.”
Mathews and Kistler struggled early in the public forum debate, losing and winning two debates. As they moved into the octofinals, it became a sudden death tournament from then on, but the pair wasn’t looking back. They claimed title to the best public forum duo in the state.
“Me and Audrey are really passionate which makes it more important to the judge,” Cheyenne said. “It really showed.”
“In the past three years all I’ve gotten is second,” Mathews says “Going into it, I really wanted to get first.”
Within 10 minutes Cheyenne had laid claim to two state titles.
“We accomplished what we set out to do.”
