The Kayhi girls basketball team lost both games in Juneau over the weekend. Friday’s game was the first match-up between the rivals this season, which ended in a 57-39 defeat. Sophomore Payton Simmons led Kayhi in scoring with 17 points. Kayhi went down 16-8 at the end of the first quarter, but cut it to a seven point deficit to end the half. The Lady Kings were within striking distance to begin the second half, but ultimately lost momentum.
On Saturday, the Lady Kings could not contain JDHS freshman Kendyl Carson, who had 19 points by halftime. Kayhi kept it close all game, but fell 60-53. Brittany Slick led Kayhi in scoring with 20 points.
Head coach Kelly Smith was astounded with the girls effort over the weekend.
“The girls played their hearts out both nights,” said Smith. “After a few basketball adjustments and getting healthy we will be right where we need to be by the end of the year.”
