The Kayhi Lady Kings (10-11, 3-3) split with Juneau-Douglas (13-5, 5-1) over the weekend in Ketchikan.
Kayhi fell to JDHS Friday night, 56-39. The Bears had a 12-0 run in the first quarter and led by as many as 15 . Kayhi cut the lead to nine in the fourth, but could get no closer.
Senior was a different story. Kayhi led 13-8 at the end of one, and 22-16 at the half. 39-36 game. JD used a 10-3 run to take the lead late in the fourth. The Lady Kings then came back to win it by scoring the last eight points of the game.
Kayhi senior Kyra Welker was happy about getting the quick lead in the first half to give the girls an extra push to put them on top.
“Getting ahead early in the game makes it easier for us, because we aren’t looking for that quick basket,” said Welker. “We got to play it at our own pace, and we didn’t have to play so urgently.”
The Lady Kings will travel to TMHS to close the season on Feb. 23-24.
