The Lady Kings will be heading North on Wednesday to participate in the Palmer Elks Showdown.
Head coach Kelly Smith is looking to get some things out of the Lady Kings trip up North.
“I am looking for the girls to bring the same energy on the road as they do in front of our home crowd,” said Smith. “Playing three different teams in three different days gives us the opportunity to work on a lot of things and forces us to play multiple styles. All which will help come region tourney time.”
They will be playing the North Pole Patriots (0-3) Thursday. North Pole lost to Thunder Mountain (49-45) and West Valley (65-28). Kayhi beat West Valley 50-47 on Dec. 29.
The biggest test of the round-robin tournament might be game 2 when the Lady Kings play defending 3A state champion Anchorage Christian (8-0) on Friday. ACS beat Sitka 76-62 and Sitka beat Kayhi 46-40 earlier this season. The Lions’ average win margin so far this season is over 41 points.
Ketchikan will then end the road trip playing the Palmer Moose (3-1) on Saturday.
Third year varsity player Payton Simmons is very excited to take on some bigger competition up North.
“As a team, we’ve been preparing every day in practice and getting more out of it every day,” said Simmons. “There will be a lot of good and competitive teams up there and we are ready to work and do the little things to be successful.”
