The Kayhi Kings football team continued their perfect season on Friday at Nikiski. The Kings defeated the Bulldogs 54-24 to improve their record to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2014. Nikiski dropped to 2-2 on the year. Kayhi is the lone undefeated team in the Peninsula Conference.
Senior quarterback Brendan Wong threw six touchdown passes in the game to lead the Kings. Wong finished the game 16-26 with 264 passing yards and also had 16 yards on the ground.
“Brendan had an amazing game,” senior wide receiver Crist Carlson said. “It was probably the most accurate and skilled game he’s played.”
Stevie Byron had the lone rushing touchdown of the game for Kayhi. Brendan Roof led the Kings in rushing with 51 yards on 10 carries.
“Stevie just gets on the goalline,” Junior Alex Malouf said. “And nobody can stop him.” Kayhi receivers CJ Jasper, Crist Carlson, and Brandon Wieber all caught touchdown passes from Wong. Carlson had three, Jasper had two, and Wieber had one. Jasper had 104 yards on six receptions to lead Kayhi in yardage. Carlson followed close behind with 93 yards on four receptions.
“Personally, I think our offense was the best it’s been in awhile,” Carlson said. “The wide receivers were dominating the entire game.”
The offensive line protected Wong, only allowing two sacks, and giving him plenty of time to throw.
“Our offensive line played amazing on Friday,” Senior Tarrant Sasser said. “We protected Wong and only allowed 2 sacks.”
The Kings forced the Bulldogs to five turnovers. Junior Brendan Roof and Sophomore Kylar Charles each had one interception.
Tarrant Sasser had 8 tackles and one sack. Chris Brown led the team in tackles with 20, while also recovering two fumbles.
“Chris was playing middle linebacker and they were running the ball up the middle,” Senior Brandon Wieber said. “He made a ton of great plays.”
Kayhi will take on Houston Friday at 6 p.m. at Esther Shea Field.
