Basketball heads to Fairbanks

The Kayhi girls and boys basketball teams will be traveling to Fairbanks to play in the Joe T basketball tournament at Lathrop High School Jan. 14-16. The tournament will feature the boys teams of Ketchikan, North Pole, South Anchorage, and host team Lathrop. The girls will face West Valley, South Anchorage, and Lathrop.
The Kayhi boys first game will be against North Pole at 4:30, and the girls will battle the No.1 ranked girls team in Alaska, West Valley at 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
The Ketchikan games will be commentated live on KFMJ, and all games will be video streamed live.

Kayhi boys split with West

The varsity boys basketball team split with West Anchorage this weekend at home. Jason James scored 25 points in Kayhi’s 81-57 win Friday night. Isaac Johnson chipped in 15 points. West Anchorage’s top scorer was Dazhon Wyche with 21 points.
During Saturday’s game Kayhi led the entire game, but West outscored Kayhi 27-11 in the fourth quarter en route a 64-54 win. Wyche was West’s top scorer for the second night in a row, this time with 23 points. James was Kayhi’s top scorer with 18 points, followed by Matthew Standley with 12.
The weekend ended with a series split. Saturday night was not an endowment game, while Friday night’s game was.

Clarke Cochrane Day 1 Recap

Kayhi’s JV girls team fell to Petersburg 50-20 in the first game of the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic, but the varsity girls and boys varsity both topped Metlakatla later in the day. The girls won 54-18, and the boys 71-42. Eliah Anderson was the top scorer with 13 points. Matthew Standley led the boys with 16 points.
Kayhi’s boys varsity team finished the game with eleven 3-pointers.

Kings take Region volleyball crown

Kayhi volleyball avenged last year’s loss to Juneau-Douglas in the Region Championship by beating the Crimson Bears in the five-game title match Saturday. It is the first regional championship in Kayhi’s history.
The rematch of last year’s championship match was set up after Kayhi beat Thunder Mountain and JD on Friday. JD finished off TM, and moved on to the championship game against Kayhi Saturday.
Jenny Hu, Kaia Michalsen, and Havalah Clark all received all-conference awards, and all seniors (Hu, Michalsen, Gabby Clark, Whitney Hamilton, and Mina Matsura) received all-academic awards.

Girls 5th, boys 6th at state

Kayhi girls started the state tournament with an 58-56 double overtime win over East in first round. Eliah Anderson hit a game winning jumper at the buzzer to win it.
Then the Lady Kings had a rough patch against Dimond 70-46 and lost in OT for the 3rd place game against Colony 53-48. The Lady Kings finished 5th at state and received the sportsmanship award.

The Kayhi Kings had a close game vs East but fell short 75-68. The boys team won their first consolation match against Wasilla 67-61, but was then defeated by West Valley 63-56 in the 4th place game. The Kings took 6th at state.

Kayhi preps for state

Fresh off a sweep of the Region V titles, the boys and girls basketball teams are focused on preparing for the state tournament next week. The tournament will kick off on Thursday and go throughout Saturday The Kings will tip-off their first game against the maxpreps No.2 ranked East Anchorage Thunderbirds. Led by Senior Captain Desmond Johnson (19.9 points per game) East Anchorage has gone 3-0 against common opponents Lathrop, Juneau-Douglas, Mt. Edgecumbe. Kayhi went 5-3 against those three foes. The Thunderbirds have an impressive overall record of 20-7 and are cruising on an 8-game win streak after winning their region. The Kings have an overall record of 17-9 and have caught fire lately going 11 for 13 and are also riding an 8-game win streak after starting the year 6-7. – Leif Svenson

The Lady Kings will face off against maxpreps No. 2 East Anchorage (23-1) on Thursday at 3:30.  Kayhi is 21-7 going into the state tournament after an intense region tournament.  This is the second year in a row that the Lady Kings will attend the state tournament.  The Kings placed 7th last year at state. – Jake Stout

Kings look for crowns

Both Kayhi girls and boys will be playing Thunder Mountain for the second time in the Region V tournament today. This time for the Championship.
The girls will play at 3pm and the boys will be playing at 4:45 in the Clarke Cochrane Gym.  The games haven’t been easy for either teams.  The Lady Falcons have challenged the Lady Kings, and even forced double-overtime on Feb. 21, but Kayhi has prevailed in all five meetings.

Last time out:
The Lady Kings played Thunder Mountain on Wednesday, and used a second half surge to beat the Falcons 64-49.

The boys won a double-overtime thriller Wednesday 60-57.

Key players:

Ashley Young – Young has totaled 50 points in her last two tournament games including 26 against Kayhi Wednesday.

Jacob Callaway – Callaway scored 23 points against the Kings and 31 points to help eliminate the Crimson Bears yesterday.
